Dale Harrington, the first director of the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center), passed away at age 83 in late August.

Dale was involved in setting up the Portland Cement Concrete Center at Iowa State University, becoming its first director and helping it grow into the CP Tech Center. At the same time, he was the first director of the Statewide Urban Design and Specifications (SUDAS) group, championing the statewide program that remains a program other states point to as a goal.

And these accomplishments were after he retired…for the first time. Dale also had a career with the Iowa Department of Transportation, served as the assistant Polk County engineer, and was a partner at Snyder and Associates.

Dale was inducted into the 2023 Hall of Fame at the Iowa State’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and in 2022 he was named an honorary member of the International Society for Concrete Pavements. He was well known for his accomplishments in the field of transportation engineering both nationally and internationally.

Dale was not only dedicated to the concrete industry but was a mentor to so many and a true friend. His professional accomplishments pale in comparison to the influence and care he showed for all of us. Dale is truly missed and the stories we tell will carry on his legacy.
