Where in the World is Jim Grove?

After 5 years at the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center) and 16 at the Iowa Department of Transportation, Jim Grove retired from state employment on March 31, 2008. Jim had served as the CP Tech Center’s PCC Paving Engineer since 2003.

Jim’s most impressive impact on concrete pavement research has undoubtedly been his leadership in the extensive pooled fund study, Material and Construction Optimization for Prevention of Premature PCC Pavement Distress (MCO). The five-year project involved 17 states in what Jim calls “the first serious look at quality control and testing methods for concrete pavements in decades.”

Jim especially appreciates the collaborative atmosphere the project helped foster among states. “The project helped bring concrete people from various states together, to work together, know each other, respect and draw from each other,” he noted.

Jim plans to continue the MCO project’s spirit—especially the emphasis on technology transfer—in his new position at the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Office of Pavement Technology.
