Concrete Overlays: Proven Solutions

The new Guide to Concrete Overlay Solutions (January 2007) is giving doubters new confidence about using concrete overlays instead of asphalt.

In straightforward language, this little booklet describes how and when

• Concrete overlays can provide quick, cost-effective, and durable maintenance and rehabilitation solutions.
• Concrete overlays can be placed on concrete, asphalt, or composite pavements.
• Concrete overlays can be bonded or unbonded.

Staff at the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center) led the development of this concise (32-page), practical guide. Six experienced concrete overlay engineers from across the country were co-authors. A 12-member oversight committee of FHWA and State DOT engineers, industry personnel, and university researchers provided feedback. 

The Guide to Concrete Overlay Solutions represents the first of a three-phase endeavor by the CP Tech Center. In phase 2, demonstration concrete overlay projects will be constructed in eight states.

In phase 3, a comprehensive concrete overlay manual of best practices will be developed. Using the Guide to Concrete Overlay Solutions as a framework, the manual will incorporate information from the demonstration projects and will describe newest technologies.
