Demonstration Projects
Each state will be asked to provide a PCC paving project, which would be a shadow project that would not disrupt normal practice. The research team will visit the project site and demonstrate the suite of tests that are determined to be critical for designing and producing long-lived concrete pavement. The demonstration projects allow state personnel to see the tests performed and gain experience performing them.
Practices Manual
A Materials and Construction Optimization (MCO) manual will describe an integrated, systems approach to selecting materials, designing concrete mixtures, and constructing concrete pavements. The MCO Manual will include information about using state-of-the-art performance prediction and testing technologies related to optimizing concrete pavement materials, mixtures, and construction.
The testing technologies will be developed in an easily understood format that specifies what the tests identify, how to use the tests, what equipment is needed, and how the tests fit together to identify the concrete properties needed to produce durable concrete.
The manual will also contain information gleaned from each participating state about its problem projects as well as its testing methods that may be unique to its state or region.
Final Report
The report will summarize the information obtained from the demonstration projects and the suite of tests development, and incorporate any other research results that may be available.
Best Practices Manual
This document will build on the practices manual. The funding for this manuals
is not included in the current funding scheme, but the planning and scope
will be initiated under this project. The manual will be a comprehensive,
easy to use guide to good concrete paving practice.
